How to Choose the Right Glass Thickness for Your Shower Enclosure
3/8 inch vs 1/2 inch shower glass — the real differences in strength, weight, cost, and when each is the right choice.
3/8 Inch Glass: The Standard Choice
Three-eighths inch (10mm) glass is the industry standard for frameless shower enclosures. It's strong, durable, and significantly more rigid than framed-shower glass. The tempered version withstands normal use indefinitely.
Best for: most alcove showers, standard-size corner showers, walk-in panels, and tub conversions.
1/2 Inch Glass: The Premium Option
Half-inch (12mm) glass is heavier and has a noticeably more substantial feel — the kind you see in high-end hotels and luxury master baths. It costs 20–30% more and requires heavier-duty hardware.
Best for: very large shower openings (over 60 inches wide), when using heavy pivot hinges, premium renovation projects.
Does Thicker Glass Mean Safer Glass?
Both 3/8" and 1/2" glass are tempered to the same safety standard (CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201). If either breaks, it shatters into small, safe pieces. For residential showers, 3/8" glass meets and exceeds all safety requirements.
Our Recommendation
For most Houston homeowners, 3/8" glass is the right choice. Choose 1/2" if you have a very large opening or prefer the premium feel in a luxury renovation.
